SHIFT is taking shape

Circus choreographer Piet Van Dycke has worked with performers of all ages: from the young cast of fABULEUS’ Beyond the Edge to the seasoned acrobats of GLORIOUS BODIES. With SHIFT, he is working with children aged 8 to 12 for the first time. At the heart of the project is one big question: what if children were in charge of the world?

Before bringing the children into the studio, there was some testing to be done. In June, Piet spent two weeks working with professional circus artists, exploring the installation and figuring out how children could safely play, build and balance with it.

Then, in the summer of 2026, it was the children’s turn. During a summer theatre week at hetpaleis, thirteen children aged 8 to 12 spent a week experimenting, playing games, building and balancing. But they also talked and dreamed about the future: about the things that worry them, what they would like to change and what the world might look like if they were in charge.

The week ended with a short sharing for an audience. It was moving, disarming and, at times, surprisingly insightful. Most of all, we saw a wonderful group of children taking care of each other and the world around them. One thing is certain: this generation has a lot to say. Don’t underestimate them!

And this is only the beginning. Auditions for the final cast will take place in autumn 2026, followed by the creation of SHIFT in 2027.

SHIFT premieres on 7 October 2027 at hetpaleis in Antwerp.
